Evaluation Briefing
The Behavioral Health Division of the Monterey County Health Department presented results from the Monterey County System of Care: La Familia Sana- The Healthy Family local evaluation study. The study shows that children and youth with serious mental health needs have fewer arrests, better grades and school attendance and improve their functioning and well-being when served through systems of care that provide community-based, family-driven, youth-guided, evidence-based, collaborative and culturally competent services such as Monterey County’s System of Care: La Familia Sana/the Healthy Family.

Local TV spot about Monterey County’s System of Care gains national recognition
Monterey County’s System of Care: La Familia Sana/The Healthy Family was nationally recognized for achievement in communications at the 2008 Excellence in Community Communications and Outreach (ECCO) Recognition Program, which took place on July 18 in Nashville. The ECCO Recognition Program highlights communications achievements that promote children’s mental health.
The TV spot is part of the “Coming Together for Children’s Mental Health” media campaign and was developed, and features, local children, youth and their families receiving services in our system of care. The media campaign is a collaborative effort between Children’s Behavioral Health and the Department of Social and Employment Services and aims to promote local resources for children and youth impacted by mental health challenges and their families. “A line in the TV spot references ‘It may feel like you are all alone, but you are not,’ a sentiment many of our youth and families can relate to. With the spot we are letting families know that they are not alone, but that there are a number of organizations working together to provide them with support and services,” said Dana Edgull from the Monterey County Health Department, Behavioral Health Division.

Children’s Mental Health Summit Day
Each year on May 8th, families and communities around the country celebrate National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day to show how children and youth with mental health needs work to overcome their challenges and thrive at home, at school, and in the community. In Monterey County Fernando Armenta, Supervisor for the 1st District, honored national Children’s Mental Health Summit Day at Maya Cinemas for the screening of “Short Movies For Youth By Youth”. The movie presentation featured eight short movies developed by youth. The movies tell their personal stories of struggle with and recovery from mental health needs. The stories tell the journey of young people impacted by violence, substance abuse, rape and anger. They speak about the emotional impact a divorce or death of a parent can have on a young person, about gang involvement. About the importance of finding someone that believes in you and your ability to change, to recover, to leave the past behind and grow stronger because of it. Click here to view sample movies. |
